SO I have been reading things lately be it books , magazines or blogs talking about Style. What is your personal style and what could you not survive with fashion wise?

Well my three things I could absolutely not survive with are:

Striped tights

Skirts(all lengths but comfortable)

and the last but definitely not least MY BOOTS

I LUV these boots I have owned them for at least 15 years. They have been resoled, restitched and abused. They are comfortable and they really lace up, they are not a pair of those cheater ones with zippers. Oh and they actually have a tread which is quite useful when you live Eastern Ontario. I have been looking for something new to replace them with but no luck so far. My hunt will continue and until then I shall keep wearing these. Though I will have to give them a little TLC before the snow flies.

SO I have been busy trying to get stock ready for the upcoming show season. This week it has been skirts. If I get everything done I have cut thus far I will have approx. 40. The goal is to have at least 50 ready before Nov. 12th.
I also need lots of other things restocked but I decided one main item each week until then is probably the way to go. It seems less overwhelming that way. Also need more headband colours, dresses, jackets. UUUGGGHH I'm making my own head hurt. ;0)

Fibre Adventures

This past weekend we attended the Fall Fibre Affair at the Fairfield Gutzeit House in Bath Ontario. Wasn't the nicest day weather wise but it was reasonably nearby. The Fairfield Gutzeit House is an old home that has been opened to the public as a museum which holds events throughout the year. This was the second year for the Fall Fibre Affair to be held there. A beautiful old home and we saw some beautiful fibre.

Munchkin is always fascinated by the process of spinning. Someday perhaps I may figure out where to keep a spinning wheel and then we will both be happy. Though I would also need to find TIME to spin also. I shall keep dreaming of the possibilities.

As to what else is going on in my life. Have been trying to get prepared for the upcoming Studio Tour which is fastly approaching. Attempting to finish some commissioned outfits and of course I agreed to two shows next weekend. These shows are at the opposites ends of the spectrum. Saturday is Taste! in Prince Edward County which is a quite large event - I will be part of a new feature they have added this year for Local Artisans and Farmers. Sunday is the Yarker Fall Festival which is organized by a community group from the small village my daughter is attending school and in the area where I grew up. Extremely different venues.

Oh and this coming Monday I have an appointment to look at some possible studio space. So Has anyone out there discovered the machine that creates longer days? I strongly suspect I need to become better at time management.

Been working on a variety of headbands these are a picture of one kind. Whenever I need to touch up my roots I seem to rediscover headbands. One of the dilemmas of hair dying. Thankfully they seem to suit me.

Also have committed to another show in November, this one is called Mistletoe Magic. I did their spring show and it was worth it so I am hoping that one in November will be even better. Hopefully Busy Hands and Fat Goose are scheduling winter shows and that they are are on different dates this time. Both of these are good because they are only about 30-40 minutes away my favourite kind of shows.

No major early rising.

Unlike next weekend where I have to be set up by 10am and it is approx 31/2 hours to Confederation Park from Napanee. So need to aim to get there between 8:30 and 9:00 at the latest. But we decided it wasn't worth another night at a hotel. Already have the expense of two nights. Oh the life of trying to sell your wares ;0)

Palmer Dress

I am horrible about naming things. So I finally decided what to call this basic style of dress. As they are mainly made using repurposed golf shirts - why not Palmer. I know not very original. But I have to stop overthinking things like naming a design.
Made some that would fit the larger figure and have been experimenting with sleeves. So these with the sweater skirts are now part of my more consistent designs. Am presently working on a couple of more options. Though as always there will never be two exactly like and they are all personally made by Moi.
Have definitively decided that I never plan on farming out the sewing of my designs. I like the fact that I can say each item available is personally created by me.

The Last While

A new sweater dress. Finally came across a sweater that went well with another one I had in my stash. Sometimes it takes a while to find the perfect sweater to complete the look. Then I have to find the original sweater which is EGADS. This often involves lots of digging and sometimes days as I am sure those house trolls hide things on me just for amusement. Also got a variety of golf shirt dresses done and some new jackets.
Went on a day trip with the family after spending the morning at a Habu Textiles sourcing talk in Picton. Have been wanting to go to a local goat cheese dairy, so after they picked me up we went for a bit of a drive. This is a wonderful structure that they have built outside the main building. It is made from reclaimed materials, being as green as possible is one of the company mandates. And their cheese is good too. We picked up some chevre and cheddar.

Skirt Comission

Not quite like the sample pictures she sent. She said surprise her and to put my own spin on it. So I made something that I feel is very versatile. Perfect for any occasion. Made the waist band dip in the front as I was pretty sure she had bellybutton adornment and guess what - I was right.
She asked for some colour with the options being Red, Bright Pink, Purple and Bright Green. I had this wonderful green trim and I dug and found some awesome plaid purple/black trim so the decision was made. I also came across this totally awesome orange fringe that I have and now need to design something to put it on. It actually looked wonderful draped across the skirt but was afraid that it may put to much of a Halloween vibe to it.
She's smiling and she wouldn't take it off before leaving so I guess that means she liked it.

Art Among The Ruins

A quick picture of my tent at The Art Among The Ruins in Newburgh. It was a beautiful sunny day. My new camp table which rolls up worked great and I think I devised a method for a change room. Though people kept asking where I got my curtains or if they were perhaps for sale. I guess I should of bought all the bright sheets GT had that day and resold them(HAHA).

A mushroom that munchkin discovered around the corner of the house at the show. Of course I was dragged over to take a picture. She knows her Mommy's fondness for mushrooms. Aren't they pretty? They were a wonderful combination of browns though towards the end of their lifespan.

Something I completed this weekend for munchkin while I sat and watched Scooby-Doo movies. She luvs the movies but needs me near by for the extra scary creatures.

The pillow is 18 by 18 and perfect for her to sit on or cuddle with. And its PURPLE. So she adores it.

P 'N' P aka Pretty in Pink and pale Blue. A petal skirt made with two Tommy Hilfiger golf shirts.

Not normally a pastel person but when I saw these golf shirts I instantly thought flowers thus one petal skirt created. Even left part of the button placket on the front panels which I think are a nice addition to the completed project. But then a top half needed to be made thus the bright pink jacket with some scrap of golf shirts used for embellishing. It fits me perfectly so now I need to find a blonde aprox the same build because I think it would look stupendous with a little cami under the jacket on someone who is tanned and blonde. Isn't it weird how sometimes you can envision a complete look? I probably should make a cami to go with it too. (Pink,blue, off-white - hhhmmm?)

Art In The City - Ottawa

Here is my new sandwich board which is all ready for my upcoming shows. My friend Maureen painted it. It reminds me very much of her which is awesome, if you know her work you would instantly recognize this as done by her. I asked her to make it colourful and for it to have movement. The other side is a different outfit and woman.

So Yeeaaahhh I just got an email confirmation that I was accepted into the Art In The City in Ottawa the end of August. Another 3 day show. It looks like it will be a busy summer for me. Create, create, create and hopefully sell, sell, sell.

Really hope I wasn't crazy in deciding to try longer shows, further away with more expenses(like accommodations). The next show is Art Among The Ruins in Newburgh which is only approx a 15 minute drive on Farther's Day weekend. It is a very atmospheric show and a great way to stay visible locally. I am sure I will see lots of familiar faces and I am setting up right next to a good friend.

Cobourg Waterfront Festival

Received my vendor package for the Cobourg Waterfront Festival. I think they have most everything possible covered. It is the 21st year so I guess they have learned from experience. It is interesting as they actually provide plywood walls that you are allowed to attach stuff to. There is even a vendor rest area and such things. It's been a while since I have done a 3 day show and especially one that seems to have all possible scenarios covered.

I really hope the weather is nice that weekend as we haven't had many days lately that don't include rain. So Rain, Rain go away whenever I have a show booked.

Doll Whoosh

So here is the finished doll. Not something I would normally make but it is what she requested. Hopefully her granddaughter likes her. She also has a little denim rucksack big enough for her owners and her snacks. So a wipe of the brow and and utterrance of whoosh I finally completed that task. I need to learn to say NO to special requests for dolls as I always procrastinate on them and I am never happy with the finished project.

Here is the painting I got for myself for a birthday present. It is called The Runicible Spoon painted by Natalie Nolan. Went and bought the fabric to make the skirt she requested as a barter. Have her measurements and have an image in mind, now to sit down at the sewing table and start creating.

The scary thing is I have actually had people walk in the living room and not notice the new addition to the room. Strongly suspect that many people are overwhelmed by the house and its decor. Oh well a creative bunch dwells there.

How I spent Friday Evening

Another reminder of how much my life has changed. Munchkin declared it Beauty Salon evening last night. First I had to do her hair while she chatted to me and flipped through a magazine - because that is what you do at the Salon. Though she has never actually been to one as I don't frequent hairdressers. Her Daddy goes but not me. Have never been able to deal with having to pay so much to have my hair trimmed which technically should take 5 minutes max. So once every 5 years or so I give in and go get it shaped a bit otherwise I grab a pair of scissors and cut away.

So I did her hair with lots of clips and braids, it really suits her though I am sure I could never convince her to leave in something like this all day. Mostly because it may interfere with her hat wearing.

Then she did mine which made her ecstatic as normally I don't let her play with my hair. But I knew it needed a washing in the morning so she had free rein. Oh by the way imagine hers purple and mine rainbow colour cause coloured hairspray was the finishing touch. Thankfully she is still happy pretending with this.

I normally don't do much with my hair as it has a tendency to get large if bothered.

So that was my Friday evening, not how I used to spend it. I guess it all comes with being a Mom and getting older.

More clothes

Dress made from 1 red tshirt and 4 black ones. Red stitching on the seams for contrast.

Been trying to get ready for the shows coming up. So here are a couple of more things I completed lately. The goal is to get at least one thing completed every day or lets say minimum 7 things a week. This week I got 2 dresses, I cardi, 3 little girls jackets(1 of these were for munchkin - she's outgrown her other one). So I am getting close to the weekly goal. My weeks start Monday so I shall have to see what I manage to complete today and Sunday.

I have also been busy making headbands for girls, I was getting a lot of requests for them so I thought I better get busy. Its been worth it cause they are selling.

Houndstooth Cardi made using 3 sweaters.

Need to get busy and finish some of my commissions and barter items. Have to finish a doll and her accessories - something I have been putting off. Always seem to have a commission like that looming in the background (we all need one right?)

Then I need to redesign/remake a purse towards a barter I did for a new sandwich board sign I had painted by a local mural artist. Will try to remember to take a picture. Also am making something for her daughter.

Then I need to create some item of clothing for a local artist who I got a painting from. This was my birthday present to myself. I shall have to post pictures of the painting and the finished clothing. Maybe I can get a picture of her wearing what I create.

What I have been doing lately

A dress made out of some sweaters. Looks very nice with a turtleneck or cami underneath. Ended up making it a bit larger for a customer because she fell in love with this particular dress, the new version had strips down each side in a coordinating colour. It looked great on her and hopefully she wears it lots.
A quite neutral version of the sweater dress/jumper. Currently I am working on dresses made with golf shirts and tanks for the hot summer days. The skirts on them are asymmetrical and patchwork my test one turned out wonderful but whoever wears it needs to be at least 5'7" cause I made it long. The problem with trying to create a full length item. I will probably have to do two different lengths. Hope to have a picture soon.
A naughty bunny(a bit creepy), I have been on a Bunny spree. Many of them have been quite cutesy so my creativity has been fighting back and thus a few Evil Bunnies are being created also. It's all a balance thing.

Yesterday bunnies made from facecloth were on the agenda. This was supposed to be a project to do with munchkin so she could give them to family and friends for Easter. It became a project that my friend Paula and I completed with munchkin being artistic director. But we got 8 facecloth bunnies completed. Then I sat and made the bunny above. Now I need a name and a way to make her some silk stockings. May have to experiment with some of my old ones.

Busy, Busy

Well I have been a busy little bee in the last month. Sending off more applications for shows and actually doing a show in partnership with Taste The County - Called Maple In The County. For anyone not in the know 'The County" in this area means Prince Edward County. This is a very marketable area they now have numerous wineries and is a favourite spot for artists to reside.

The show was upstairs of a very nice independent bookstore call Books & Co. A preferred venue to me as it is reasonably close, has great coffee at the attached cafe and in general the right kind of clientele. Though walking up and down the stairs for setup and take down is a real workout. I just refer to it as part of my workout program. Usually have a few follow up sales from any shows I do there which is always great.

Presently I am trying to wrap my head around which shows would be the most beneficial to do considering travel, accommodations and cost of space. Then there is always the consideration of spacing as if the sale is amazing I need to restock for the next show. Has anyone out there discovered that magic 72 hour day?

So every once in a while I get these great wool cardigans which I then wash to see what transpires. Anyways I decided because of the pockets some of them would make great tooth pillows. Don't ask about the train of thought. But aren't they cute.

Munchkin approved and once again I had to pay the "Munchkin Tax" as it is called in our household. which means she takes something that I have created and claims it as her own. This time I also got 3 kisses and 4 hugs also.(Does that count as payment?) So I guess she is ready when she starts loosing teeth in about 2 years.

Green for March

First of all excuse the wigs bedhead it kinda reminds me of my own hair some mornings. But I had to post some pictures(even if they aren't the best) of the finished item. Yes I really did finish the green shawl. Yeeahh for me. OK I am done patting myself on the shoulder. ;0)

I shall get some better pictures done at the same time as I get some other clothing photographed.

So I had every intention of getting some sewing done yesterday as it was a munchkin free day. But alas instead I went with my friend Holly thrift store shopping. Realized I need to stock up on sweaters before everyplace packs them away, all the spring and summer stuff is coming out. SO we went to a kinda local Sharing Centre and they were having a bag sale Yeeaahh. So that means whatever you can stuff in your reusable shopping bag was $5. So three bags there. Not many sweaters though.

The we went to BFM(Bibles For Missions) I have been remembering the acronym as otherwise I have a tendency to call it Missions for Bibles. Here we lucked out as all red or green tags were half price. I scored a great black three piece ensemble which is probably 50's era for $3.50. The lady who was helping to pack the bags wasn't very happy. She pointed out that it had to be priced wrong. Now I have to figure out what I am going to do with it.

It is kinda dangerous to go in my workspace at the moment. Attack of the sliding mountains of clothing.

Getting Ready for Shows Etc.

Skirt and jacket ensemble.(presently hanging in the store window) I have been on a real grey kick in the last while. Have made myself a dress, jacket, and skirt all in varying grey tones. Now I am making things to sell. Next I am going to try to be inspired by some browns. Neutrals are always a good choice the more vibrant colours are much more person specific. I have been working on a green shawl off and on for about a month now. Really thought I was over my dislike for green but there still seems to be some latent feelings. Going to force myself to finish it this weekend. When I can distance myself from it I will probably like it (I hope).
This jacket looks best with jeans tried it with a skirt just doesn't look quite right. Maybe more of a cargo skirt. hhmmm. And look it has some green. Also has quite a few pockets, must of been thinking where to stash tissue and electronics that day. The tissue are imperative to me, my allergies are already hitting me must be all the wind we have been having. It is definitely blowing something about my sinuses don't like. I love pockets even though most things I wear for some reason don't seem to have them.

Ooopps!! Forgot to post something under this title. Better late then never. ;0).

Looking forward to seeing what my swap partners blogs are like. This is a wonderful way to be exposed to some blogs that I wouldn't necessary come across in my normal days online.

SO as to what I have been up to. Well I got some more clothing pieces done and sent an application to a large show in downtown Toronto. So keep your fingers crossed that I pass the jurying process. Hope to get pictures done of the new clothing done soon. When that happens I will be sure to post them.

I have committed to being a guest artist at a studio tour in the Autumn. I'm one of the guests at a mural artists home/studio. Also getting some other dates confirmed for shows this year so will have to update the sidebar soon.

It's Sunny Outside

So these are some of the things I have completed lately and photographed. Needed pictures to apply for some upcoming shows this year. Now I just need to get some applications in the mail with cheques(uughhh). The cheque writing is the part I hate cause then you have to add up the total and of course come up with the money. ;0)

Saturday Morning

So I came into the store this morning and we had forgotten to empty the coffee pot and put the filter in the compost pail. Well the filter was just begging to be made into something it had dried so beautifully. So I made a boutineer. AM starting to suspect that I have a thing for garbage created from coffee.

-Meet Betty The Yeti. She is the start of a monthly challenge to create a limited series of monsters every month. Probably going to do editions of 6 and try to keep the cost between $15-$20. This one was inspired by a sweater I picked up at a thrift store and went 'Cool it's a Yeti Sweater' - remember the sweater in the movie "About A Boy'. Also I had just received an email from Urban Threads lately with some new monster embroidery patterns. So thus Betty the Yeti was created, shes works at a spaghetti orchard. So now what to do for March, I have some ideas floating about in my mind

Shows Done For The Year

Here's me at my last show of the season-Fat Goose.(Not the most flattering picture) It was a very fitting end to a long weekend and the year. It was a licensed event so I got to have a couple of dark beers and listen to music while selling my wares. The weather kinda cooperated, we had storm warnings but in the end it was just extremely wet. The rain didn't seem to deter the customers it was quite well attended. It was a total crap shoot as it was a Sunday evening from 6pm-11pm at a new venue. I didn't have a really full display as I had to leave some things in Picton-Busy Hands. I had been there Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 10am3:30pm. The show didn't end until 5pm so I left some things on my table that a friend was kind enough to mind and then pack up at the end of the day. Both shows were definitely worth my time so I really hope they don't conflict next year.

It is always so great to find shows that are true craft/artisan shows. I am always disappointed when I go to a show and see vendors with mass produced products or selling things like Avon. In this neck of the woods some organizers do not distinguish the difference. But I am getting much better at weeding out these type.

Make It Indie Show

I am so proud of myself I remembered to take pictures of my booth after getting it set up. They aren't the best pictures but hey they are pictures. This was a very nicely organized and attended show. There was a great variety in vendors even people who worked with similar mediums were quite different from each other. Cobourg is much closer then I had expected, I had always thought of it as being further away. In reality it is just over the hour if you take the highway. So I may be checking out other shows in that area.

Rings and Things

Here is a quick picture of some of the needlefelted rings I have been having fun making lately. Been trying to get some little things made along with working on some new clothing items. Also in production are covered buttons made with vintage fabrics(was given a box of quilt squares by one of my Aunts - she got them in a job lot at an Auction). They have been in my stash for a few years and I finally realized I am not going to piece them together so why not use them for other things. Thus hair elastics are being created with some pretty cool fabrics.

The little things will hopefully help cover the cost of my spaces at the next few shows I am participating in. I always find it is a good thing to have stuff in the range of $5-$20 when doing shows as they are the bill payers. The bigger items are not so much impulse purchases. But it has been better since I accept Credit cards at shows. Though it does still always depend on the show.

I have two coming up that are totally new to me so I shall have to see how they go. One of them is Make It Indie in Cobourg which I am attending tomorrow. I am going to try once again to try to remember to take some pictures after I get the table set up. But don't hold your breath as I have been meaning to make this a habit for every show I attend and well it hasn't happened. But I am packing my camera this time.(cross my fingers)

The Last Week

Here is munchkin dressed in our compromise costume. She is a zombie princess, if you can't guess. It was very cold here on Halloween Eve so extra clothing had to be used. I dressed up as the witch doctor who created he and her Daddy was Baron Samedi. She had a great time even though we only hit approx. 12 houses.
Some buttons drying. I happened to score a large pickle jar full of buttons the other day at a local thrift shop. They desperately needed a washing. Some of the pearlized buttons didn't survive the ordeal. But the assortment is awesome. Lots of white shell shirt buttons, large and small buttons of all types. Still sorting.

More items for the season

Now I just need to figure out munchkin's costume. She was going to be a robot but every other little girl has told her they are going to be a princess. Peer pressure at 4 - a scary thing. So I think we have her convinced to be a zombie princess. Compromise.

Well this weekend disappeared. It was Thanksgiving here in Canada and I also was a vendor at a HarvestFest in a neighbouring community on Saturday. Then one of my parents former exchange students (aka littlebro) suddenly visited for two days with his Mom. It is always great to see him, but it made the weekend even more hectic. Hubby, munchkin and I took care of the meal on Sunday so my Mom could go out with their guests in the morning. Actually hubby did most of the work.(My parents only have dialup out there so no computer time for me - it takes forever to download anything)

So I am finally just getting this blog posted for the swap on Swap-bot. I apologize to my partners for the delay. Hope to check out blogs this evening after getting back from the Spinners and Weavers meeting I am going to check out tonight. I shall have to start scheduling at least 1/2 hour everyday for computer time. Need that anymore to keep up to date on things.

Open Farms

After munchkin warmed up to the horse a bit.

Introducing ourselves to some goats who really liked dry leaves.

We went on a little mini day trip a few weeks ago. The Farming Association set up a day where you could go visit various farms within the community. A wonderful idea especially for kids so they can see where much of their food comes from. It was a beautiful fall day and we completed our trip by going to a small local bakery and having a treat and coffee.

That Time of Year

It's that time of year again where I can humour my own fascination with the bright coulourful imagery of The Day Of The Dead. It is so fun and funky. It's all such a wonderful combination of bright colours, black, whimsy, flowers, skulls and I like the concept of honouring our descendants. Family is a big part of my life and respecting my elders was taught to me at an early age. Two things I am hoping to pass on to my own daughter.

I also love the fall in Eastern Ontario, the changing leaves on the trees add colour to even the grayest day. In general Autumn is my favourite season.

Learning the ways of wool

Oh the wonders of learning to spin. Here's me playing with a drop spindle which Susan was good enough to loan me so I could perhaps spin some of my rovings I dyed. Now to get some time to master the technique. This was all part of the demos we were conducting during Arts & Culture Week in Canada. This is a busy weekend for me as I am doing two demos both Saturday and Sunday.
Here's Munchkin trying the spinning wheel. I would have to take time and get her to focus on consistency of speed, otherwise she seemed to be picking it up quite well. Just what I need more incentive to desire a spinning wheel. Cause I have plenty of time to master a new handcraft. ;0)

Hamming it Up

Munchkin had a great time hamming it up for the camera when a friend(Paula) and I were trying to get some good shots of some clothes I created(altered). She kept refusing to keep that tongue in her mouth. But I really do have to admit most of the pictures were pretty cute tongue and all.

So here are a couple of pictures. The hat is something I adorned for her and she absolutely loves it. She wore it to the Montreal Jazz festival and it was very appropriate. The jacket is something I have for sale at the store.

Flowers Done + some sample necklaces

Got lots of flowers done for embellishment purposes. Its a great way to have some things prepared beforehand for restocking purposes.

I have also been busy trying out different designs and styles for an upcoming class I am teaching at CreativFestival Toronto in October. It is called Funky Fibre Accessories and is 1 1/2 hours long. No idea how many students there may be, or their experience. So I have been trying to come up with a variety of options this month. Then I shall make up class patterns for a couple of them at the end of September in preparation. The pink flower one is using a pattern I found on Ravelry for reference. I must check to see who the designer was again.

IN Production Mode

I have been stitching the sweater leftovers as I go along. This is a much better way to approach the situation as then I have a bag of flower makings. Instead of a bag of mess. A new approach for me which hopefully rubs off to all other things in my studio.

The reason behind the sweater leftovers is I have been working on a line of skirts created from reconstructed sweaters and tops. So far I have come up with three basic designs, two for sweaters and one for tee's or lightweight knits. Oh I am also making flowers if you didn't guess, which are being used for embellishment or are having new lives as hair accessories and brooches.

My goal is to get about a dozen done and then do some proper pictures.

Contest - Sublime Stitching

My design is finished and completely stitched now just to get it sent off to be judged. I ended up using pieces of four designs by Sublime plus some details added by me to tie it all together. I used some hand distressed fabric around the edges to frame it a bit but I haven't decided what to do with it as a finished item. It always frustrates me when I get a bit of gathering in the fabric where there is heavier stitching. I have tried numerous methods of stabilizer but in general whenever I use a lighter fabric as my base(which makes for easier stitching in general)there is always some puckering. And my obsessive gene rears its ugly head.

Contest

SO this is the beginning of a piece I am working on for the contest Sublime Stitching is holding. You must use a minimum 3 patterns put out by the company. I have used 4 plus added some of my own design to tie it all together. I think it may take a lot more hours to complete, but so far so good. Part of the decision making is going to be how to finish the edges once I am completed with the main picture.

I am also presently working on a panel for the shop using hand dyed cottons and embroidery. This way I have a little variety of pieces to work on. Also need to start a piece on the theme of Mad Hatter's Tea Party, for this one I need to decide what medium I want to work in. Keep debating about doing something more sculptural.

Munchkin's Project

Or I should say the project she demanded Mommy make. I got the embroidery done, now to make it into something. She doesn't need anything else to hang on the wall. Some may say shes spoiled as she does not lack for artwork on her bedroom walls or anywhere else in the house. Some's mine, some's hers and well things by other artists are plentiful in our house also. I always wonder when people come to visit and they wander kinda aimlessly or in wonderment trying to take everything in. I guess you can say our decor is not sparse.

So back to the embroidery. What should I make a pillow, bag(for her treasures), clothing item? Or I am open to suggestions. If you have an opinion let me know.

Scenic Napanee

So last night after supper we decided to go for a walk along the Napanee River. It's the first time we have made it down to the new and improved boardwalk. It is pretty impressive though I am not overly keen on the pavement, but I do get why they chose it. The old boardwalk was made of wood planks and was always needing some replaced. This new one is also much wider which makes it easier for people walking dogs with their children in tow. Munchkin was in heaven, she likes to check out the ducks and the fountain(s). They just added a second fountain so now there is one at each end.

The Blue Heron was fishing for his supper. He likes to hang out at the bottom of the Falls and catch fish as they come over.

Embroidery Swap

I know the cloud looks sad, I think it is because he realizes he is interrupting the bees work day. Anyways I like it, I hope my partner does also. It is from a pattern for Sublime Stitching designed by Julie West. Of course I now have had a demand from munchkin to do her one, so she helped me pick out the images and where to put them. Hers is going to be on some handdyed cottons. I really like the look of hand embroidery on the handdyes.

I also need to get busy on some other swaps that involve embroidery, one is called Not Drawn By Me, I need to check if my partner would appreciate something drawn by munchkin or whether I need to get an adult to draw something for me. Not that it will necessarily be a better drawing.

What I Have Been Playing With

So I have been playing around with making jewelry from all repurposed/recycled items. Thus this necklace. It is made from an old belt buckle, seeds, beads, wire, felt bauble and some velvet ribbon. Oh and an old rhinestone brooch.

I like how it turned out so I think some more may be in the near future. It is actually very comfortable to wear, it's much lighter then it looks.

Store - Frayed Around The Edges

So here is a quick picture of the space I am sharing with a friend. Of course it already looks different then this. Have been working on the website for the store, hopefully we shall have some product pictures posted soon.

Got my studio and family room switched around. The family room is mostly sorted, still need to find places for lots of things that were in the studio. The space is smaller, but it has much better lighting for working in the evening. Hope to get some jackets and adult clothing done before Art Among The Ruins. Once I get the space sorted I will post some pics.

So I finally finished a purse that was ordered the beginning of April.

Cleaning my studio has interfered with my creative time, as it has become an ordeal. But you can now see the floor and I think I have a plan of how to move everything to their new room. It wil be nice for the summer to be able to go out the patio doors and perhaps spread out onto the deck also. I will also be able to keep track of munchkin easier when she is playing in the backyard. I know the dogs will be much happier spending more time outside. Just need to pick a day(or perhaps two for the MOVE). Maybe this coming weekend.

Been busy, busy, busy so Finally a new post

So I have been busy working on the move for the store. We are moving to a space with two windows on the main drag of Napanee. We aren't gaining any floor space but hopefully there will be more visibility.
My latest creations have included altered jackets for children and adults. I also made some skirts using some real cool pirate fabric I found while visiting in Montreal. The prototypes I made have been well received and if I don't say so both munchkin and I looked pretty good while wearing them. This coming week I hope to play with a couple of top ideas.
So the next few weeks are going to be busy, but things are coming together. Looking into doing a photo shoot with a photographer friend, so checking out locations and getting busy finishing some more pieces are main priority. It's all about focus. Which I am still working on.;)

February/ Show Applications

So its a new month. With new decisions to be made, including which shows to apply for.

Just did one in Kingston yesterday called 'For The Love Of Craft'. Good show, just always have problems with trying to fit my stock on a table only 3by6. Am discovering that the small spaces seem to be a trend lately. But it is quite different from a 10by10 space which I am more accustomed to.

Will have to go through the applications I have received and pull out a calender and check scheduling, prices, distance etc.

So it is another New Year, with some new best intentions and all that Jazz.

Have been trying to get a variety of things done. Thus far I have managed to create an assortment of lollipops, felt desserts, aprons, pita with falafals and cucumbers, cupcakes and more things on the way. Now I need to take pictures of everything and finally get something posted on ArtFire. I am getting closer. ;0)

Hamming It Up

So I got my jackets done. Munchkin was kind enough to model them for me though she was having lots of fun hamming it up. It is getting harder and harder to just get that child to stand still. But she is cute(problem is she knows it). Anyways I am very happy with how they turned out I hope the girls like them. They were both very specific with what they wanted on them, but I have never meet them, which always leaves it a bit of a crap shoot.

So something else off my list. Also was a good girl and got the hats done. Whhoo Hooo.

Now on to some Christmas presents. Well soon, still have a few other orders to take care of.

November is Done Yeah!!!

So the last month has been pretty hectic. Shows every weekend plus trying to get other commitments done. But thankfully it is the last day of November. No more shows booked for the rest of the year.

Here are a couple of small wool wallhangings I got done amongst all the bustle.

So now I need to complete two commissioned jackets, one commissioned scarf, and complete an order for some hats for a children's store. I shall have to double check my lists and orders to make sure that is it. But I think that is all.

Otherwise I need to restock some things for myself, such as cookies, aprons, muffins, tea cups plus get some samples done for the upcoming workshops in the New Year. Oh yes the other goal that keeps getting shuffled is to get some things posted for sale on my ArtFire store. So list making time once again to try to remain focused. Really need to convince munchkin to model some of my new hats and clothes. She hasn't been the most cooperative in that department lately.

All in all I am really looking forward to December.

Little Things

SO I have been working on a variety of smaller items that would be much easier to ship, partly because they are light. So many of the things I create are awkward, heavy and sometimes breakable.

Day Of the Dead images have long been a fascination of mine. This round of them was started from some swaps I had signed up for on Swap-bot. Also the fact that I have been cleaning my studio(very gradually), and have been finding treasures(aka half finished things). One of the next things on my list are to finish the three wallhangings I rediscovered that are DOD.

Fairy tales have also long been a fascination, I have been collecting books my whole life. I love the older versions. So may of them have been watered down by taking out all the bad parts. Which were kinda the point as they were meant to teach the younger generation the perils of life. The illustrations are also awesome.

Frog Prince is one of a series I started that is the story written on the background fabric with imagery from the story added. The Hansel & Gretal piece was inspired by some wonderful panels I discovered at a local quilt shop. Some of the fabric panels for books that are available are so wonderful. I am drawn to them but never want to use them as is. They just need embellishments and such added.

Schedules

So life is getting ahead of me again. Obviously cause I have not been keeping up with this. So I guess I need to keep myself to some stricter schedules. List time again with time frames. Now I just need to teach myself to follow them.

This month is going to be very hectic, so I am presently looking forward to the first day of December. This weekend is going to be a big attempt to get caught up on some stuff I wish to complete. Must make every effort not to get distracted. ;) I'll let you know how it goes.

Halloween is Approaching

So Halloween is my favourite holiday of the year. And it is fast approaching. Have been trying to get many things done. Still haven't gotten around to finishing setting up my ArtFire account, have the bio done and most of the other basics. Now I need to get some items on their to sell. Then I need to get an Etsy account up and running. Many small steps will eventually get me there. I'm hoping.

So here is one of my latest embroidery projects aka procrastination tools. I think she is pretty cute. Now I have to decide what to do with her from here.

Getting Caught Up(HA!)

Well I have been trying to get caught up with everything. I think I may be getting close but that changes moment to moment. Have the new space pretty well all set up, have a few people signed up for workshops, but more would be nice. Patience is a virtue(that is the saying I think).

Have also been working on giving the building a face lift. Holly and I were both busy yesterday morning. She fixed broken concrete and painted the awning. I cleaned the front foyer and painted some walls. Now to see what the landlord thinks of our efforts.

Perhaps one of my errands today should be to take some pictures of the revamps and a street view of the store. I shall add it to my list.

What's Up

So we have been busy getting the new shop up and running. I will be offering a variety of workshops and have many of the things I make for sale. This weekend was the local Scarecrow Festival so I thought what is better then making a store scarecrow. I think she turned out pretty amazing it only took Holly and I a full afternoon.

We have been painting walls, hanging displays, designing business cards and other propaganda. All in all it has been a busy three weeks since we signed the papers for the space. Now here's hoping we get some students for the classes offered.

The window display has been a work in progress. Trying to get samples of all the available workshops done and displayed at the shop and pictures posted to the website. Work is never done.

On top of all this I managed to pinch a nerve in my shoulder which has slowed down production a bit. But I think we have approximately half of the class samples done now. SO we are getting there. Need to do pictures of everything on Monday hopefully.

Fairytale Challenge?

So I haven't totally forgotten about the challenge of a fairytale piece every two weeks. I have two started, now just four more to go. Maybe sometime soon I shall have some time to give to them.

But silly me, now I have started another business venture. Teaching worshops along with a friend of mine. This involved renting a space, a new website, ordering some new business cards once again, painting the new space, plus, plus and plus. Someday perhaps I shall learn not to jump in with both feet(haha). So here's to keeping our fingers crossed that it is all worth it.

I also started my children's art workshops today at a local kid's store. I will be teaching most Monday's after school for the fall. First Mixed Media, then Jewelry and then Knitting. It went quite smoothly today, the kid's all seemed to enjoy themselves and didn't want to leave at the end. Will have to see how next week goes.

I really do think I should probably not commit to anything else this Fall. Now if that was only apt to happen.

Bewildered Bunnies

So here are some of my Bewildered Bunnies hanging out at the sale in Merrickville.Had to make some more as the one I made for munchkin is one of her favourite sleeping companions. And one must always listen to the three year olds in ones life. As least that is what she has been trying to convince me lately.

So the weekend wasn't the busiest but all in all it was a pleasant weekend. Though I got a cleavage sunburn. Serves me right, didn't even think about sunblock, or the cut of my dress. Cleavage was never something I worried about in my life, and I assure you I don't have much. But it is still annoying to get a burn there.

Also discovered that the sidewalks roll up in Smith Falls in a similar manner as to Napanee. If it is after 4pm on a Saturday, not much is happening. But the hotel room was Ok and the price was right.So another show down and only a few more scheduled for this year. Just have to decide if I want to do many shows in 2010. The exposure is always good but they are all so unpredictable lately. Decisions, decisions.

What I need to concentrate on in the next month or two is getting caught up on my other commitments. I was a bad girl and missed the first deadline for a new challenge I just agreed to. Not a good start. But I promise Shirley I will get to work on it and make every effort to not be late with the other ones. So now I just need to actually start the first block with a fairytale theme. Take a picture of it, post it and email a picture to Shirley.

Then I need to get caught up on the swaps for Swap-bot, finish that quilt I started, get some other UfO's done and squeeze in some more gardening. Also need to start thinking about the Art Classes I am teaching this fall. Looks like the one starting on Sept. 14th is a go, as long as the space gets finished. What is the date today??? Time flies when there are deadlines.

Another Hot One

Well it is another hot day in Eastern Ontario. Working on getting some lollipops and finger puppets done for next weekend. Decided I should get some more little things done, they always seem to cover the rent of the space. Will have to try to get some new cookies done this week also. There also isn't much room left in the truck so I decided to stay away from making any more larger items for the upcoming show.
This past weekend proved once again that shows are not what they once were. People are much more hesitant about purchasing items. Didn't see any one wandering with big ticket items and I noticed more vendors have little items for people to purchase. Will have to see if I get contacted for any commission pieces.
Hopefully it cools down a little bit so I will feel like finishing my latest quilt. But I just can't face having it on my lap at the moment to finish the stitching and then bind it. Here is a closeup picture of the last one I completed in similar colours. It all started with a mystery quilt box. This is when you are given a box with a piece of fabric and some embellishments/thread. The box then passes from one person to another with each person adding a quilt block they made by using what is in the box. This one ended with 8 blocks as that is how many were in the group. I then added some of Shirley's(Sarum Studio) hand dyes to complete the project. And here is a more overall view.
The new one was inspired by a package of orange hearts I received for a swap. Then I decided to use the words Love and Cherish in various languages for the rest of the theme. So hopefully I will have a picture of the finished quilt for some time next week.

Trying to get caught up

Well back into the roll of things. For the last few weeks I have been spending most of my munchkin free time creating stock for the upcoming shows. Then I went and picked up a show on July 29th. So anyways I have got some new stock made. Here are some of the jackets I got done.

I also got various skirts done, in sizes 2-3 and 4-5. Though I am seriously thinking about sizing things by waist measurements. The sizing of clothing is so wonky anymore. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to them. Munchkin wears anything from stuff marked 3-6months to 4 years. And since she isn't quite 3 that doesn't make much sense. But then again I find all clothing sizing inconsistent. Measurements of shoulder width, waist, and hips I think are the general way to go. I am going to try to come up with a sizing chart for the clothing I have been making. Another chore to do in the next couple of weeks.

Linen Teatowels etc

I finally came up with an idea of what to do with those linen teatowels and tablecloths I have a compulsion to give a home to. They just seem to call my name, some of the are just so cool. They have silly recipes, sayings and images. Many of the souvenir ones are gorgeous. Anyways I started to create stuff with them. The first things are these handbags.
Now I shall have to decide what to do with a few more. Purses or something totally different.

Well here is the sample jacket I made to see how it turned out and to see if I had fun creating it. I like the hand dyed cottons with the added trims.

Here's the second finished, it was a special order. Now I am on the hunt for some more jackets(as I have another special order), but I am discovering most places don't sell jackets this time of year. Always the dilemma when it comes to clothing, you never seem to have the size they want.

A Productive Day

Well today was pretty productive. Munchkin was off visiting the gypsies(aka Oma & Opa), as per normal on Monday. It is my day to get things done. So today I worked on a variety of swaps and of course some aprons. The aprons will soon be at an end. I have approx. another dozen to finish and that should be good for the summer. If I sell all of them I am sure I could be persuaded to make some more.
Here is the needlebook I created for the Tag game in Quality Craft Swappers, it will be on its way to the United Kingdom tomorrow. I also put one in as a hostess gift for a swap of dotee dolls in the group Cloth Paper Studio. I got seven others completed, I shall see if anyone is interested in them at the next sale I do.

The next thing I got done was a Postcard for a swap labeled Almost Dark Blue. It is fun to play with the cheesecloth I dyed last summer. And I finally found a use for those embroidered fish I cut off a thrift shop dress. I need to make a second one still as there are two patrners in this swap.
The next swap I got packaged up was called a Useable Useful swap and my partners likes notecards. so thus two handmade notecards and one of my altered tags are going in the mail for her.

The final postcard was for the May lottery in the Handmade postcard group I belong to. I know it is June but I'm not running that late on it as the name wasn't drawn till the last day of May. Maybe I should start on June's Pc now so it is ready when the next name is drawn.
So that is most of what I accomplished today. All in all a productive Monday. I am now caught up on all my swaps and I actually got some stock completed.

Mommy's Little Helper

So it has been a day of aprons. Here's munchkin modeling and helping Mommy around the house. She loves to use the little rechargeable vacuum. And what little kid doesn't like to stir the stuff in a bowl. We were making cupcakes. So I got 24 aprons cut out today here are some of the fabric I used.

Breakfast Anyone?

Well does it look good enough to eat or at least pretend? I think I finally got the bacon a more edible looking colour. Though of course I have now decided to tweak the eggs a bit. The edges keep curling up on these. As for the toast I have two options the full slice or two triangles. As I am discovering people are very particular about how their toast is served. The things you find out about people when showing them fake food.
I also have been working on a bunting flag for my booth when am at sales. Just how much work I want to put into it is the question. I am really tempted to do scads of hand embroidery, but there are many other things I should be doing instead of that. So I think I shall take inspiration from a email I got yesterday from Lovecupcakes and use vintage tablecloths etc for the backing. Thanx Lovecupcakes. Though I am sure I will add stitching to it at some point. I am going to work on this today, also plan on getting signs etc done. Especially one that says I can now take Visa and Mastercard(YEAH). Maybe I shall also get time to work on a couple of altered clothing pieces. I know big plans. But if you haven't guessed munchkin is at Oma and Opa's.

Not So Appetizing

Yummm. Doesn't it look yummy. NOT. The things I do trying to get something to look realistic. I keep trying to find that perfect yarn to create some bacon. So I finally resorted to using coffee. It still looks a little raw but it does look like bacon. Honestly.
Will have to post a picture of the complete breakfast. The only thing it is missing is the coffee. But I think that may not be the best thing to encourage children to drink. My own is already addicted and she isn't even three. She enjoys drinking the dregs out of the mug. Don't ask, we usually appease her with a warm milk as her coffee. Her favourite hang out is the coffee shop, but I suspect that is my influence. It is often the end of our morning walk.

Fake Food and Making Stock

So I have been making all sorts of fake food lately. My daughter just loves it all and since we go to a Waldorf Parent/Child group once a week the ideas just keep coming. It is also a good thing to work on while amusing Isadora and helping her with her own art projects. I know the looks/responses I get sometimes when I answer the question of "what are you making?" are bafflement, surprise, stunned silence, curiousity. Anyways the range is growing everyday. I hope to finish my green eggs and ham soon, still haven't determined how large to make the ham. I should probably just start and go with the flow. That is usually the best answer for me.
These are a couple of things I completed in the last few weeks. When I get my ham done I shall make sure I post it.

And really I'm not just making food. I have also been working on dolls and I actually got started on a new fibre piece this week.

What I have been doing lately

Well I am not keeping on my main idea behind this blog. As it has been over a month since I posted. But here are a couple of images of what I have been up to in the last month.

The doll is for a swap from swap-bot that was titled Felt Dolls it was sent to Italy and I really hope 'Junkolove' likes her when she arrives. She was inspired by Tim Burton, she's a combination of Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline his newest movie. She's not quite what I expected her to look like but she seemed to just develop. That is probably the best way for a doll to be.

The next image is a miniature cake that I made for 'dbowie' for a Tag from a group I belong to called Fake Food. It had to be something for a tea party, so this is what I created. I suspect I may of got carried away once again. But oh well I do have that tendency.

Getting Started

Well I guess we all have to start somewhere when creating a new blog. Have been putting this off for ages. The plan is that this will help encourage me to take pictures of new things and maybe even get better about updating my websites. The mediums I work in seem to vary greatly in the last while. I think it all has to do with chasing around after a 2 and a half old. There she is waving at you.
So here's the plan, so I have something to prompt me. 1)To put pictures of the swaps and projects I am involved in, both what I make and receive.
2) To take pictures and post them of things I make to sell. 3) To keep a record of my creations and my daughter's too of course. 4) To do a new post every other day or so.
